News Letter 6/12 (Treating Scaly Leg)

Sunday, June 10, 2012

Q/ Are your chooks legs looking a bit strange? Are their legs looking all knobbly with the scales sticking out? Chooks pecking at their own legs? Even worse, chooks become lame?
A/ It sounds like your chooks have a parasite called "scaly leg mite"
(Knemidokoptes mutans) This tiny poultry mite (Different to the Red Mite) burrows underneath the scales on your chickens leg & causes discomfort, irrita-tion, inflammation & even to the point where she can go off the lay. In more severe cases can even kill your belovered chooks - It will spread & is unlikely to get better on its own.
